Social-
The goal of the French was "mission civil trice." This means that they would assimilate the natives to the French culture. The Southeast Asians reacted in a violent way as any nation would when they are being overthrown. In the 1850’s the Southeast Asians executed a French missionary as well as the Spanish Bishop of Tonkin. The constant disagreements led to the Second Opium War. This was a war between Britain and France against China and parts of Southeast Asia. All in all their social reactions were very negative. The people revolted. This eventually led to the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a conflict between Vietnam and the French powers. It occurred from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu marked the end of French involvement in Indochina. Independence was given to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was a social and political victory!
Political-
The political powers and beliefs varied throughout the time period. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, political ways were closely tied to religious beliefs. In the beginning, when the idea of Buddhism was incorporated into Southeast Asia, the line between kings and divine rulers was sketchy. The people of lower classes believed that certain kings were “Buddha’s to be.” They looked to them as a spiritual god and gave them all of the power. A belief of a Universal Monarch also circulated throughout the area. An idea about Universal monarchy began to spread. When colonialism was present, the intruding Europeans tried to take the rule. The rulers would become puppets to the European power. As time passed, and independence was gained little by little, the countries began to drift away from the monarchy system; however, Thailand is an exception.
Religion-
Early on, the predominant religion throughout Southeast Asia was Buddhism. Everyone followed Buddha's philosophy of a central path. In the 1840s a group of Catholic priests went into Vietnam in hopes of converting them from Buddhists to Catholics. Conflict began when the anti-Catholic Vietnamese leader killed seven of the priests in Vietnam. Emperor Napoleon the 3rd responded by sending the French army into Vietnam. He defeated the Vietnamese and began building a French empire known as Indochina or French China. The area encompassed Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. As a result of new trade, inventions, and ideas, people of Asia and of the world naturally migrated. They would work on plantations and in mines in Southeast Asia. The region became a melting pot of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists. The racial and religious conflicts that were created in this pot are still seen today.
